SYNERGY in simple terms means “working together”. But it means more than that. It refers to when the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. When two people move furniture together they will more than double their effectiveness than if they were to do it individually. Anyone who has tried to move tables, beds and sofas knows this well. You yourself are more than the sum of your body parts. When we bring our combined expertise and experience together and share and learn together, synergy is going to happen. And it will be electric!
CONFLUENCE means, literally, flowing together. It describes when rivers merge to become part of something bigger. We all maintain our distinctiveness, but we come together to become a part of something bigger. And we flow in the same direction.
One of the strengths of our fellowship is that it is entrepreneurial by nature. It celebrates individual initiative, and as a result we have seen many remarkable examples of campus ministry arising across the country over the years. However, our strengths can also be our weakness. We are learning to cooperate with each other and to learn from each other. And when we combine the “can do” spirit with the humility necessary to work with each other, amazing things happen. Seriously. It is amazing.
That is the essence of 1 Corinthians 12-14 which describes and celebrates the unity and diversity of the human body as an example of the Church and our mutual need for each other. That is the point of this Summit.
